This is the formula, my mother lived by. It worked so well for her, I’ve lived my entire life by her rules.
You’ve moved into a new home and naturally, the cabinets are all different. Now comes the decision about where to store what.
Here’s the formula: no cans above the stove, all spices and dry ingredients, as close to the working counter as possible. Drinking vessels all go in the closest cabinet to the dining table. The dinnerware follows closely behind.
Cans and cereals get stored in the darkest, coolest pantry or cabinet. Pots and pans get stored low while those items you use only once or twice a year, gets stored high.
Dish soap and cleanser, those things you use strictly for dishes and at the sink, go under the sink. The rest of the household cleaners get stored outside the kitchen, usually the linen closet or in a utility room.
Sharp knives go in one drawer while the eating utensils go in another, preferably the closest to the dining table.
If there is space in the kitchen, store your kitchen towels and rags in a bottom drawer. If not, try the utility room.
Living by a lifetime standard in your kitchen, sure helps you to regain your footing, when you’ve just moved into a new home. You will always know where to look for what. And if you teach your family the formula, they too will always know where to look first.
It sounds like such a simple thing but it has helped to organize my life in the kitchen.
