There are several types of dreams. Understanding what type of dream you’ve had, is half the battle.
There are emotional dreams, spiritual dreams and prophetic dreams.
An emotional dream is brought on by life experiences and fears. A spiritual dream is actually your own spirit talking to you or seeing something through spiritual eyes, instead of mortal eyes. A prophetic dream is an actual prophecy.
People who are motivated by and lead by the Lord, have a common language in their dreams. I am a Christian and I’ve experienced all 3 types of dreams. I’ve even had spiritual dreams and prophetic dreams, before I came to the Lord, so I do know there are times when Jesus Himself, calls you through your dreams.
From this point on, I’ll be talking about spiritual and prophetic dreams and how to know if your dream fits these types.
A spiritual dream is when your very own spirit is trying to explain something or see something that your mortal eyes or mind cannot conceive. One of the best ways to know if you’ve had a spiritual dream, is to examine that dream and ask yourself, “Is this a replay of something that has actually happened?” “Is this something I’m dealing with, right now”.
If it has to do with something that has actually happened in real life, it’s most likely an emotional dream and it’s only meaning is your own mind trying to deal with it, or perhaps it’s somebody you miss and have been thinking about. Dreaming about something that’s part of a new job, seemingly overwhelming, it’s most likely you adjusting to that new job.
If it’s not something that has actually happened and it seems the dream was all in symbolism, most likely it’s a spiritual dream. Things like walking a fence, being in a crowd, driving or riding in a car, helping someone or seeing yourself working some place where you don’t nor never have worked.
There is a fine line between a simple spiritual dream, and a dream that has come straight from the Lord and is a prophetic dream. Prophetic dreams can also be about the future or it can be a deeper understanding about something.
Prophetic dreams always come with a signal in it, that this dream is the Lord talking to you. Those signals will always be symbols of either Jesus or the Holy Spirit. Actually, not symbols of Jesus but Him actually being there. He will be the kind person helping you, in some way. You will feel you know this person and yet, in waking life, you can’t name him or place him. But in the dream, you felt perfectly safe OR perfectly loved by this person.
I belong to an online group of Christian prophetic dreamers and through the years, we’ve learned the meanings of lots of things, as they are common among the dreams. Personally, I’ve witnessed Jesus as a waiter and I’ve witnessed Him as Himself (in person).
Symbols of the Holy Spirit, take on a whole other scene. He is most often a body of water. Not the ocean, but a lake, a stream, a pond, a pool, a fountain. Sometimes He is running water, sometimes still. For some the Holy Spirit comes in the form of flooding water.
Another signal that this is a prophetic dream, a message straight from the Lord, is the number 3. Something happening in 3’s or 3 items that stand out in the dream. Usually, when an object, it’s a symbol of something ordained by God. Something like 3 candle sticks or 3 columns. In one of my past dreams, it was 3 flashes of bright light. In the dream, I thought someone was secretly taking pictures of me but never found a culprit. In that same dream, immediately after the 3 flashes of light, 3 fancy looking women came to the door. When “3″ is your signal, it will come in the dream as something standing out. Something you can’t miss.
A bridge over water, is in a spiritual dream and represents the passing between mortal life and spiritual life. It can mean death or it can mean that you’ve changed gears, in the middle of a dream and instead of looking at something from the mortal point of view, you are now viewing by spirit.
Televisions show up in spiritual dreams, all the time. The meaning is that from the point the television enters the dream, you are viewing something ‘afar’. Whether afar meaning on the other side of the world or afar meaning in the future, depends on what the message is that follows.
In a car = spiritual. If you are driving it means something that you ‘head up’. Meaning a life change or something new in your life and it came or will come through you. If someone else is driving, it means your life is being lead by someone else or you’re caught up in something that came through or will come through someone else. If you know the driver, then you know where this event is coming from. If you don’t know the driver, it’s either good or evil. If good, it’s the Lord. If evil, you need to pay attention to the dream and understand what it’s trying to warn you about.
If you’ve had a dream that’s really bothering you and you’d like some help understanding it, comment here and we’ll talk about it.
